What we collect. When you play: your answers, scores, stamps and streak, linked to an anonymous browser id (or to your account if you are signed in). If you give us your email: your email address, where you signed up, your time zone (so the daily quiz arrives in your morning), the emails we sent you and whether you clicked a link in them. If you have an account: the nickname and avatar shown with your posts. We also collect basic usage data with Google Analytics.
The daily quiz email. When you enter your email — to get the daily quiz, or to sign in so you can play with an account, post or comment — we also add you to our free daily quiz email. Every email has a one-click unsubscribe link and a link to choose what you receive.
Posts, comments and likes. When you post a memory (including any photo), comment, or like a post, we store it with the time and the account or anonymous id it came from. Posts, comments and your nickname are public. Your IP address is stored with them only as a one-way hash, used to enforce posting and abuse limits.
Cookies. at_pid: an anonymous id (no name or email) so you can resume a quiz; 1 year. at_player: keeps you signed in; 1 year. at_email_ref: set for 3 hours after you click a link in one of our emails, so we know which email brought you. at_optout: remembers a Do Not Sell or Share choice. Google Analytics and Google AdSense set their own cookies.
Advertising. We show ads from Google AdSense. Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this website or other websites. Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visits to this site and/or other sites on the internet. You can opt out of personalized advertising in Google Ads Settings, or opt out of some third-party vendors' cookies at aboutads.info.
How we use it. To run the quiz (score your answers, let you resume a play, keep your stamps), to send the emails you signed up for, to measure site usage, and to limit abuse using a salted hash of your IP address (we never store the raw IP).
Who helps us run the site. Resend sends our emails, Cloudflare delivers and protects the site, Vultr hosts it, and Google provides Analytics, AdSense and our backup storage. Each gets only what it needs to do that job.
Sharing & your choices. We do not sell your personal information for money. Google Analytics and Google AdSense may count as "sharing" under California law. Use "Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information" in the footer to opt out at any time — we also honor the Global Privacy Control browser signal automatically.
Keeping and deleting your data. We keep your data while the site is active. Unsubscribing stops our emails right away. To have your account, posts or email address deleted, email [email protected] and we will do it within 30 days.
Children. AmericaThen is not directed to children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect their information.
Changes. When we change this policy we update the date at the top.
